How Spotter compares with PictureThis, iNaturalist, Merlin Bird ID and PlantNet, feature by feature, including where they're better.
Most nature apps specialise: plants, birds or mushrooms. Spotter covers plants, animals, fungi and rocks in one place, with safety notes, regional range and field recordings, so one app handles whatever you meet on a walk.

What to look for in a nature ID app
- Coverage: do you only meet plants, or also animals, fungi and rocks on the same walk?
- Speed: an answer in seconds, or one that depends on community volunteers responding?
- Safety information: does the app say whether what you found is toxic or venomous, and with what caveats?
- Pricing that fits how often you use it: subscription, one-time purchase, or free.
For most hikers the practical setup is one general app for everything you find, plus a specialist where you go deep: Merlin for birding by ear, and iNaturalist if you want your observations to count for science. The usual mistake is relying on a single-category app and then meeting something outside it.
The apps at a glance
- PictureThis
- Excellent plant identification with plant care and disease diagnosis — great for gardeners. Focuses exclusively on plants and requires a subscription for full access.
- iNaturalist
- Free community-powered platform covering all species. Identifications come from the global naturalist community — excellent for citizen science, but results depend on community response time.
- Merlin Bird ID
- Best-in-class for birds, with real-time sound ID and full offline packs. Completely free. If birding is your only activity, Merlin is exceptional — it just does not cover anything other than birds.
- PlantNet
- Free, scientifically rigorous plant ID backed by research institutions. Great for botanical accuracy and contributing to plant databases. Plants only, no safety focus.
- Spotter
- A field companion for hikers. Plants, animals, fungi, and rocks — identified from a photo with safety notes, habitat maps, regional range, and field recordings. Free to start.
