How iNaturalist identification works

iNaturalist suggests an identification when you upload a photo, then relies on other naturalists to confirm it. An observation becomes Research Grade when the community agrees, which can take hours or days, and longer for unusual species. That process is what makes its data valuable for science, and it is also why it isn't built for an answer on the spot.

Using both together

A common pattern is to use Spotter for the instant answer in the field, then log the observation to iNaturalist later so it counts toward biodiversity research.

Spotter also uses iNaturalist's regional observation data as context: when you take a photo in the app with location turned on, species commonly observed near you are weighted in the result.
