What Are the Sudden Swarms of Flying Ants? Nuptial Flights Explained

On a warm, humid afternoon in late summer the air is suddenly full of winged ants — pouring out of a sidewalk crack, swirling around the yard, clinging to the side of the house, or piling up on a windowsill by the hundreds. A day later they are gone and the ground is littered with shed wings. It looks like an infestation, but it is actually a wedding: the brief, once-a-year mating flight of an ant colony. Here is how to identify flying ants, how to tell them from termites, and why the swarm is nothing to fear.

It is a warm, muggy afternoon in late summer, often a day or two after rain, and the air is suddenly thick with winged insects. They boil up out of a crack in the driveway or a seam in the patio, swirl in a loose cloud over the lawn, cling to the sunlit side of the house, or collect by the dozens on a windowsill or in a spider web. If it is happening at your home it can look like an outright infestation — and then, within a day, it is over, with nothing left but scattered, glinting wings on the ground. What you witnessed is not a plague but a wedding. Once a year, established ant colonies release their next generation of queens and males on a synchronized mating flight, and for a few hours the sky belongs to flying ants. Here is how to recognize them and understand the spectacle.

How to Identify a Flying Ant

The winged ants in a swarm are the colony’s reproductive adults, called alates — future queens and the males that mate with them. Most ordinary ants you see are wingless workers, so the wings themselves are the first clue. A few features pin them down:

  • The waist: a narrow, pinched "wasp waist" — a distinct constriction between the thorax and abdomen — which is the single best mark separating ants from termites
  • The antennae: bent or "elbowed," with a clear angle partway along their length, rather than straight
  • The wings: two pairs, with the front pair noticeably longer than the hind pair, held over the body and shed soon after the flight
  • Two sizes at once: swarms often contain larger winged queens and smaller winged males together, sometimes alongside wingless workers milling at the nest entrance
  • The timing: brief, weather-triggered swarms on warm, humid, still afternoons and evenings in late summer, frequently after rain, with many nearby colonies of the same species flying on the same day

A winged, pinch-waisted, elbow-antennaed insect swarming from the ground on a muggy August or September afternoon is a flying ant. Many of the late-summer swarms in North America come from small soil ants such as the cornfield ant, sometimes nicknamed the "Labor Day ant" because its flights cluster around the end of August. The swarm can be enormous, but the individual ants are the same harmless species you see foraging all year — they are simply wearing wings for a day.

Flying Ants vs. Termites

The one identification that genuinely matters is telling a flying ant from a swarming termite, because winged termites (called swarmers) emerge in the same way and can signal a structural problem in a building. Fortunately, three features separate them cleanly. First, the waist: ants have that pinched, hourglass midsection, while termites have a thick, straight-sided body with no visible waist. Second, the antennae: ants’ antennae are bent and elbowed, while termites’ are straight and look like tiny strings of beads. Third, the wings: an ant’s two pairs are unequal, with longer front wings, while a termite’s four wings are all the same length and extend well past the body. If the swarmers pouring out have a clear waist and bent antennae, they are ants and no threat to your house; if they are waistless with straight antennae and equal-length wings — especially emerging from wood, a foundation, or indoors in spring — it is worth having a professional check for termites.

Why They Swarm — and Why It Is Good News

The mass flight, known as a nuptial flight, is how ant colonies reproduce and spread. Rather than releasing a few winged ants here and there, nearby colonies of the same species synchronize on the same favorable day — typically warm, humid, and calm, often right after rain when the soil is soft — so that queens and males from different nests can find and mate with each other in the air. This flooding of the sky all at once also overwhelms predators: birds, dragonflies, and other hunters gorge on the swarm but cannot possibly eat them all, so plenty survive. After mating, the males die within a day or two, and each fertilized queen drops to the ground, breaks off her own wings, and searches for a spot to dig in and start a brand-new colony. The shed wings you find scattered on a sidewalk the next morning are the leftovers of that mass wedding. For your yard, a flying-ant day is harmless and even beneficial: the ants do not sting or damage the house, and they are a feast that feeds birds and other wildlife at a key time of year.
