About Spider Identification

Spotter identifies spiders and other arachnids from a photo you can take from a comfortable distance. The overwhelming majority of spiders are harmless and helpful, and Spotter tells you the species, whether it is of any medical concern, and its role in the ecosystem.

Each result includes key identifying features and habitat. Only a couple of spider groups warrant real caution in North America — Spotter helps you recognize the ones in your region so you can give them room rather than a swat.

Tips for Better Identification

Photograph from a safe, comfortable distance — no need to get close.
A clear shot of the body markings and, if possible, the eye arrangement helps a lot.
The web shape (orb, tangle, funnel, or none) is a strong clue on its own.
